After you have selected the right Ikebana container and the flowers for your arrangement don't forget the base on which it will sit. Many people don't think about this but it is also an important component of the entire Ikebana piece. Just like the container should complement the materials so should the base. The base or stand separates the piece from the surface where it will be displayed.
There are many types of bases such as a beautiful hand carved Chinese rosewood stand which comes in all different sizes and shapes and can elevate your container and thus enhance the arrangement. Often in Ikebana you will want to display the finished container with an accessory ( bronze incense burner, figurine, etc) in this case an elegant base such as a lacquered flat stand or freeform burl can be used. This unifies the two pieces into a more dramatic presentation.
Many people don't realize how a pretty stand can compliment any fine piece of porcelain or bronze or even create a much richer look for an inexpensive piece of pottery. An appropriate stand is always wise to consider when displaying just about anything in your home. It can make the difference between an object looking plain and rather boring to showcasing it in a different way.
Rosewood and teak stands come in a huge variety of sizes and shapes from round and flat to "square round", scroll stands, ovals, squares and even multi-level stands to display small collections of items such as netsukes.
