How to Install Glass Block Windows in Basements

Many of us have basements in our home that could use a bit of improvement. What can you do? You could put on a new coat of paint or you could install a couple of glass block windows. They are a great addition to any home and the installation process isn't hard at all.
First, let's just explain a little about glass block windows. They are great for areas that don't require a lot of extra ventilation, and they come in a variety of different colors and tracks. They can really add a great deal of beauty to what would be an otherwise dull living space. Some patterns give a room more privacy. While others give a room a view that is crystal clear.
Since these windows make such a great addition to the home, many people rush to get them installed by professionals. That's a great option, but you can also install these windows yourself. Here's how to do it.
To install a glass block window in a basement you need to first make sure that your glass blocks fit the window opening. You'll need a utility knife that is pretty sharp, plastic tracking, plastic spacers, caulking that matches the tracking, silicone sealer, and a plastic putty knife. Additionally, you'll need a drill, pencil, measuring tape, and wood screws. There's no need to worry about buying all of the supplies individually because many stores sell everything in a nice convenient kit.
You should take the silicone sealer and put it on all of the horizontal seams. Make sure you don't put on too much of the sealer. You'll have to then put the sealer on vertically, this time skipping the horizontal parts. Make sure you do this on both sides of the window. Next, using the plastic knife, smooth the silicone out. Make sure you use a moist towel to clean up excessive silicone. Lastly, use the latex caulk to seal up the perimeter of the tracking and both the exterior and interior of the window frame.
With the right care and technique, you can get the glass block windows you want without spending a fortune out of pocket. Even if you made a mistake, you can learn from it and try again. Installing glass block windows in basements doesn't have to be difficult at all.
