Donna Karan - The Creation of DKNY Perfume

DKNY perfumes were created by the legendary American fashion designer Donna Karan. Donna Karan modeled her perfumes, and her fashion brand after that duality, and co-existing characteristics that define New York City. Donna Karan is a born and bred New Yorker, and still lives there to this day. She started her career training as a fashion designer at the Parsons School of Design. She then began her career under the tutelage of the Anne Klein fashion house. For many years, Anne Klein was a strong, American fashion brand. Donna worked her way up, and became one of the head designers of Anne Klein in less than 10 years. In the mid 1980s, she left Anne Klein to start her own fashion house brand, Donna Karan New York.

During the formative years of Donna Karan New York, Donna decided that she wanted her brand to appeal to all of New York, and to celebrate that parallel characteristic of New Yorkers. For example, while New York the epitome of sophisticated, glamorous, wealthy, and chic, there is the side of New York that is the epitome of hip, streetwise, gritty, earthy, and blue collar. To this end, she split her merchandise under two divisions. There is the Donna Karan New York division that is more upscale. Then, there is the DKNY division that is more economically priced, and that appeals to hip, and young people. She used this strategy when she created her line of perfumes.

For example, there is the DKNY perfume. It features notes that are sophisticated, mature, and very American classic. But where Donna has found wild success, is with her DKNY Be Delicious perfume line. The whole line is a celebration of New York in the springtime for the everyday person. The design of the perfume bottles are even designed to look like shiny round apples, as New York is known as the "Big Apple". The first incarnation of Be Delicious smells like fresh green apples, with classic crisp floral notes. Donna re-mixed the formulation with a limited edition version of Be Delicious that featured red apple notes, and dark berry bottom notes. She then created a Be Delicious version that smells like fresh pink and white apple blossoms, with slight citrus notes. There is even a night time version that is very rich in heady, musky, sensual oils for nighttime seduction.
