Men's dress clothing options continue to explode. Fabrics, colors, fit, layers, accessories all come together to create a "look." Because the brain pays SO much attention to visual information, you need to make sure your style in men's dress clothing makes the statement you want to convey.
Some pointers:
1. Know who you are. Look, no one respects a poser. You can get away with a little bit of fantasy, or wannabe, in fact it's nice to stretch. However tempted you might be, though, keep yourself honest. For instance, if you're slightly built, stay away from the lumberjack look. If you take the kids to school in a minivan, Dog the Bounty Hunter is off-limits until Halloween. Got it?
2. Be comfortable in your own skin. A corollary of know who you are, being comfortable in your own skin means not denying your current dimensions. If you're 5'8" and have a 36 inch waist, it just IS, at least for right now. If this is you, do not wear trim-fit shirts or size 34 pants - others will likely not appreciate that it inspires you to think about exercising.
3. Keep it appropriate. Men's dress clothing options now run the gamut on the runway, but most of us live on Main Street. It doesn't matter if you have the legs for the short shorts under suit coat showing in Milan, DON'T!
4. DO have a little fun. Okay, permission for JUST ONE, really fun piece - trendy, bright, studded, whatever suits your fancy and puts a smile on your face whenever you wear it. Just keep it subdued, it should be remembered as a glimpse. If people are gawking and have involuntarily glued their eyes to this addition, well, there's your sign, you have crossed from tasteful to ridiculous.
We live in a world cursed and blessed by way too many options, now, even in the world of men's dress clothing. Be thoughtful when you put your look together, you know the definition of "pioneers," don't you? They're the ones with the arrows in their back...
